History of Channel Cal

Origins '99-'01

In the school year 1999-2000, Brian and Chris, at UC Berkeley (henceforth known as Cal) met in a dorm and began playing Starcraft together. They would meet in the battle.net channel "cal" and arrange to play team games. As time went on, Brian(foo) and Chris(mod) told other people about channel "cal" on battle.net, and a gathering of Cal Starcraft players began congregating nightly at "cal." Among these were Kris(Chris's then roommate) and Peter (Brian's younger brother). Non Berkeley people who were friends of the Berkeley people came into the channel as well - Peter Tseng (Peter's friend) and later on Jon (Heeroyuy). In the sophomore year of the original duo, Chris moved into an apartment with Johnny(jtt) and Jason. Of course, Johnny started playing Starcraft with the rest of them. In the summer of 2001 mod convinced Michelle(mnm) to try out Starcraft. She was hooked, and eventually transformed into the infested Kerrigan of channel "cal." She moved into the same apartment as mod left and Pat (PowerPuffPika) took Jason's place and started playing with the group as well.

Roystonites '02

mnm had a class in UC Berkeley with Kyle (tennis_spamboy) and worked with Dan (fongpee). They apparantly knew each other and introduced the channel cal group to a group of UC Berkeley students who lived in Royston and played Starcraft. Channel cal was then populated with players such as the above mentioned as well as other Roystonites - Ben (illbuckawlil), Dave (Wongod), Jon (ChinaJapanKorea), Andy (infinite-loop), and others.

CCCRI '02-'03

mnm began recruiting people from everywhere - from class, from work, even from bjunkyard forums. Eric(wasabi) from bjunkyard forums introduced mnm to James Chi (jchi7). jchi7 introduced mnm to a new world of players on east/cccri. Among these players was Henry (Qyxvaz), a cccri player who currently still plays in channel cal. jchi7 also organized the first cal/cccri tournament which motivated mnm to play more 1v1s.

Berkeley LAN '03

More UC Berkeley students came trickling into our channel as well as non berkeley students brought there by others. I believe Bryan (OneNOnly[yg]), a Berkeley student, brought Anton (collegeBored) to the channel. Wisdom (Calpoly) and Vlad (Chobohobo) wandered into this channel sometime around this time. James Lin (Whizkid77), another student from UC Berkeley also joined the channel (and met mnm in cs class). Out of this network of people, mnm started hosting SC LANs at her apartment and met some of the channel cal people in person.

WCG '04

collegeBored showed mnm the world of WCG. Both went to Las Vegas Qualifiers 2 and met FroZ, eVaDe, sMaQ (and Sara) as well as other people. Both went to Los Angeles Qualifiers and met Blind, Venom, Teck, Hovz, Prohon and a bunch of others. Both also ended up going to WCG US Finals - hung out with Dan (Rekrul), slog4, sadist - and Grand Finals - met Marko (p0rtia), Rick (PuertoRican), Jorge (hurtntime). As a result, channel cal broadened its scope and people from WCG started going to channel cal. At the same time, old school channel cal players started to quit sc and move on to wc or other things. Some of the Warcraft III players still go to channel cal and play dota.

TL.net and California Tournaments '05

Qyxvaz and mnm started playing 3v3s and needed a 3rd partner to play in team constantly so mnm looked to teamliquid.net. People from tl.net started joining cal for both 3v3 and 1v1 games. After mnm went to the SF LAN and the SoCal LAN, more people from those events started joining the channel. Channel cal has established itself as a channel with (mostly 1v1) players of all levels from average players to the top players in the US.

op cal '05

8/12/05 - With the increased popularity of channel cal, it became overpopulated and a lot of random people started showing up in the channel. Channel cal regulars had no control over the channel and did not want to have to deal with the bm from other people. Amongst the complaints, it was decided that we should switch over to an op channel. Whizkid77 asked for all those who were in favor of an op cal in his friends list and it was a unanimous decision. I, mnm715, then told my friends list to go to op cal. Hence op cal was born. The cal bot was already in the channel. Maxamius had one day checked to see if the cal nickname was taken and it wasn't much to peoples surprise. He had held on to it for a while and decided to give it over to sMaq and WhizKid77. Cal currently utilizes sMaq's bot sometimes in conjunction with WhizKid77's bot in the channel. It is also being utilized as a toy for op cal regulars to play with when loitering in the channel. With access to the bot, op cal regulars such as sMaq, WhizKid77, mnm715, Qyxvaz, Chobohobo, BlueLaguna, T_v, {Mr.X} and real.m)phantom have the ability to regulate the channel so it doesn't get crowded and bm (bad manner) is not tolerated. (Coincidentally, 8/12 is also the date when www.channelcal.com died).

op cal '06

12/8/06 (written by Qyx) - Highlights: The continuing popularity of op cal, the ascension of the Cal bot, the rise of 3v3BGH/RW/TMM/TMP, the fall of community leader mnm715, and the birth of mnm.

Earlier in the year mnm715 finally got a Cal bot of her own from whizkid77 to regulate the op cal community she helped start. mnm715 continued playing 3v3BGH regularly with Qyx and their dedication to it solidified. During the WCG '06 US Open when Froz was kind enough to house many sc competitors, sMi.Newb got players interested in clan sMi, including a few op cal regulars such as sMaq - who joined their ranks as sMi.NightToad. sMi's popularity increased as well with sMi.lastgosu winning the US finals and many sMi clan members from op sMi. began frequenting op cal. Regulars now include sMi.Saturn, sMi.DirtyBirD, sMi.Focus, and others.

After beloved 3v3BGH ally FightAsBlind left for school and mnm715's plea on TeamLiquid.net for more 3v3BGH allies, many of the members from Team Liquid started visiting op cal and quickly discovered the talent and community in this channel. Shortly after, channel op tl-west was born from Team Liquid and has become a sister channel to op cal with many players migrating between the two. As a result, Bill307 from tl.net became a welcome ally with mnm715 and Qyx.

Thanks to the brilliant map-making skills of Bill307, Team Micro Melee (TMM), Team Micro Platform (TMP) and recently Team Micro Melee II (TMMII) were born to replace RaceWars (RW) as the game of choice for 8 player groups. The UMS phenomenon spread quickly and TMP has become a game of choice for Froz aka MX3000 aka Absolute_Zero, another occasional gosu 3v3BGH ally of op cal's mnm715 and Qyx. Though mnm715 and Qyx dabbled in RW, TMM and TMP, 3v3BGH remained their passion, and they continued BGHing with Bill307, and occasionally FightasBlind, whizkid77, bluelaguna, and evade[clean] (who has since gone MIA).

After leading Team Philippines in the South East Asian Starleague, and Australia & South East Asian Nations League for a year; as well as serving as Head Admin for SCLegacy, mnm715 stepped down from these positions in order to refocus herself in the Starcraft Community. Recently, mnm715 has been asked to participate in a WCG panel on Starcraft as well as possibly referee the next WCG US Finals.

Inspiring a renewed interest in BGH through dedicated and consistent play, mnm715 and Qyx have been fortunate to recruit gosu 3v3BGH allies in recent months, including HnR)Insane and Shooting_Spells, once a most-feared opponent with a winning record against them!

In November, through HnR)o.o (aka smi.arbiter) who had been monitoring bnet for it's availability, mnm715 was able to secure her ideal SC handle, and mnm was born...
